EPES

Efficient prediction of vibro-acoustic properties in the ship design phase

Within the framework of the EPES project, a simulation and analysis tool was developed to speed up the calculation and assessment of relevant acoustic properties during the design and construction phase of ship structures. Forschungszentrum Jülich (reference number 03SX305G) sponsored the project. The other project partners of EPES, other than SzM and Fraunhofer LBF, included the Flensburger Shipbuilding Company mbH & Co. KG, Fr. Lürssen Werft GmbH & Co., Novicos GmbH, Technische Universität Berlin, Technische Universität Hamburg-Harburg, Howaldtswerke-Deutsche-Werft GmbH, and TKMS Blohm + Voss Nordsee-werke GmbH.

The EPES project was an excellent platform for the Research Group SzM to show our methods that were designed for the control of structure-borne and airborne sound in practical applications. Here it became apparent, that the classical experimental methods for determining coupling coefficients (reflection, transmission, and absorption) involved high uncertainty. Therefore, our Research Group conducted an analysis of possible sources of uncertainty in the measurement methods that continued even after the conclusion of the project.
