Design for Acoustics
This course introduces the fundamental rules of acoustical design. The theoretical basics of acoustics are briefly introduced and illustrated by means of illustrative examples. Based on this, the methodology of design for acoustics in product development is explained. Finally, primary and secondary measures for noise reduction are presented and illustrated by means of examples and case studies.
- Introduction: motivation, environmental pollution “noise”, human hearing, limits of harmfulness of noise, design for acoustics, types of noises
- Basics of acoustics: properties of sound waves, wave types, frequency spectra, levels, A-, C- and Z-weighting
- Design for acoustics: systematics and methodology in acoustic product development, specifications in requirement and functional specifications, procedure for design for acoustics, case studies
- primary noise reduction measures: Influencing excitation forces, principles for the generation, conduction, and reduction of structure-borne sound, reduction of radiation by constructive design of the sound source (acoustic short circuit)
- secondary noise reduction measures: Insulation of vibrations and structure-borne sound, various types of silencers, sound barriers and enclosures, systems for active noise and vibration control.
