New equipment

Under Construction

Our new acoustics laboratory is currently being built on the TU campus Lichtwiese on the south-eastern outskirts of Darmstadt behind the mechanical engineering main building. Three acoustic laboratories are to be built in a facility currently under construction on the Lichtwiese campus of TU Darmstadt. The specialized interior design of the acoustic laboratories will be financially supported by funds from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) of the European Union.

Objectives

The aim of the project is the planning and construction of modern acoustic laboratories according to the current state-of-the-art for acoustic tests on technical products of all kinds. Particularly, a semi-anechoic chamber, a reverberation room, and an anechoic chamber are planned. This allows experimental measurements of sound pressures, sound intensities, sound power levels, sound absorption, and transmission loss as well as directivity. Such laboratories are not yet available at TU Darmstadt and in the entire southern Hessian area.

The European Union's ERDF funding covers the user-specific interior design of these three laboratories, i.e., the special interior fittings with sound-absorbing wall and ceiling claddings, special doors, technical interior fittings and a crane in the semi-anechoic chamber.

Results

With the future acoustic laboratories, TU Darmstadt will have a significantly improved research infrastructure. The research group SAM understands noise as a harmful environmental impact that must be minimized as far as possible through fundamental engineering research and subsequent knowledge transfer into industry. Future acoustic laboratories will therefore make a significant contribution to reducing noise. This in turn has direct positive implications for human health, the conservation of habitats, and species diversity. In the key area of mobility, acoustics takes an interface function so that future acoustic laboratories will also contribute to resource efficiency.
