Machine Acoustics – Fundamentals I

The lecture “Machine Acoustics – Fundamentals” spans two semesters, “Machine Acoustics – Fundamentals I” in the winter semester and “Machine Acoustics – Fundamentals II” in the summer semester.

The lecture generally takes place on Mondays from 11:30 until 14:15. In addition to the theoretical lecture material, the course can include practical demonstrations, small experiments, multimedia content, and numerical simulations.

Content of the lecture:

  • further educational opportunities in the field of machine acoustics at TU Darmstadt
  • motivation, environmental “noise” pollution
  • rating levels, thresholds, guidelines, evaluation of noise (emission- and immission-limits)
  • forms of noise
  • sound field quantities, sound energy quantities
  • acoustic wave equation of the sound field
  • impedance and admittance
  • definition of “level”, level calculation, reference values
  • frequency analysis, frequency filters
  • A-, C-, and Z-weighting
  • relationship between oscillatory displacement, velocity, and acceleration
  • noise generation chain for force-excited and velocity-excited machine noises
  • direct and indirect creation of sound
  • differentiation between primary and secondary noise reduction
  • basic equation of machine acoustics
  • sound pressure, sound intensity, sound power
  • radiator types and sound propagation laws (sphere radiator, line radiator, area radiator)
  • fundamentals of room acoustics: sound propagation in free fields (direct field) and in reverberant fields (diffuse field)
  • four measuring methods for the determination of sound power: free-field method, reverberant-field method, reference sound source method, sound intensity method
